What causes Melasma?

Melasma generally coincides with hormone fluctuations, particularly estrogen, and progesterone. This is why it frequently appears during pregnancy and has earned the nickname, “ mask of pregnancy. ” It can also appear in women who are taking oral contraceptives.
– Each person genetically has a specific skin type.
– Some may have more melanocytes present in their skin.
– This predisposes them to pigment conditions.
– Exposure to UVA/UVB can worsen these conditions. Rays from the sun cause a biochemical peroxidation process in lipids, an element of the cell membrane. Basically, the lipids are oxidized, losing electrons to free radicals. As a defense medium, melanocytes( structures within skin cells) react to these changes by producing further melanin, which has been described as the skin’s own natural sunscreen. ActiveFX Laser Resurfacing

There are numerous forms of laser systems available. However, only certain wavelengths are ideal for treating melasma. At The Laser and Skin Clinic, we use ActiveFX Laser Resurfacing to help clear signs of melasma and other hyperpigmentation issues as it can treat deeper pigment concerns.
Lasers work by irradiating the skin in a veritably precise manner to target and exclude the organelles( within skin cells) containing the melanin, also known as melanosomes.

1. Once the body destroys melanosomes, it initiates a shedding process to remove the remains.
2. During this phase, the skin may become hypo-pigmented, appearing lighter than normal.
3. This temporary lightening of the skin is a common reaction after melanosomes are damaged.
4. Subsequently, a re-pigmentation phase follows to restore the skin’s natural tone.
5. The re-pigmentation process helps the skin regain its original color and appearance.
6. Overall, the body’s natural mechanisms work to restore the skin’s pigmentation after melanosomes have been destroyed.

Typically, the inflexibility of the condition and the skin type will determine the treatment, and it will typically require 1-3 treatments to effectively reduce melasma. See ActiveFX Laser Resurfacing for further information.
